How Aaron Gordon is destroying Miami's defence in the NBA Finals
Mike Malone's tactics to start this season were a genius move for Denver
I get messages from NBA fans all the time telling me they miss how I break down footage in the TV studio, so as I’m not on air for the NBA Finals, I will be bringing you extended analysis via YouTube.
In the first episode, I take a look at how Denver are utilising Aaron Gordon’s strength and athleticism to create easy opportunities for the Nuggets. We saw glimpses of this during the regular season match-ups between the two sides, and it was on full display in the first quarter last night. Gordon scored 12 points in the first period of play, getting the Nuggets out to an early 9 point lead.
Take a look at the video below as I explain the intricacies of how Denver are utilising his size mis-matches.
Miami could combat this by starting Kevin Love, Cody Zeller (or even Haslem, Yurtseven or Jovic is we want to get really crazy) at the 5 to match-up with Nikola Jokic, meaning Bam Adebayo would shift down to the 4 to guard Aaron Gordon to prevent what you saw in the video. This is something we discussed in today’s episode of The Hoop Genius Podcast with 3x NBA Champion BJ Armstrong, which you can listen to here.
I’d love to hear any feedback from you all, and let me know which other players or tactics you want me to make videos on. Please do subscribe to the YouTube channel and tell your friends about the video as it will go a long way to helping me on this journey.
