I consider the late great Nipsey Hussle to be one of my biggest inspirations. Not only because of his lyrical prowess and ability to tell stories over the hardest west-coast hip-hop beats; but more-so his approach to business being something that resonated with me. Nip placed a great deal on the concept of ownership. Now whilst he may have been referring to artists owning their music instead of selling it to labels, it’s a core principle that fascinates me.
Before I was an NBA analyst on TV, I started my career as a writer. The skill of painting pictures with words is starting to become a lost art, so I would like to pick the metaphorical paintbrush back up, and paint for you tales of basketball so vivid you’d think they were works of art created by Da Vinci or Van Gough themselves. In a world where social media algorithms are ruining your attention spans by overloading your brain with dopamine in the form of content you can consume in under 20 seconds, I would like this to be a place where you can take a break from reality. Kick back and enjoy reading about the sport that we all know and love, from a perspective you might not yet have considered.
So the question is: can I take ownership of my work, in the spirit of Nipsey Hussle?
Can I distribute my words without putting it on a network’s website? Can I make a career being independent from one organisation, but instead with a loyal army of basketball lovers by my side to support me? Can I continue to inspire a generation of ambitious young people who are trying to achieve things in life that everyone told them were impossible? I guess this is the only way to find out, and I would be honoured if you joined me on this journey.
The Marathon Continues.
